Calling out the Right, Republicans and other jerks in politics

Things the GOP Hates

Ahhh, the Grand Old Party.  Party of Lincoln.  “Family Values” Party.  “America First” Party.

Yeah, right.

In contrast to their image as caring, nurturing, patriotic, defender of the little guy, freedom-loving…(wait a second, I must be thinking of someone else)

At any rate, if you haven’t already guessed it, the unbelievable hypocrisy of the republican party has turned what was once merely a party filled with people with different ideas about how to run things, into the “Party of No“, and republicans have really turned out to be haters.  And some of what they hate may surprise you.

1.  republicans hate 9/11 responders: House republicans voted nearly unanimously to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion to the heroic rescue and recovery workers who responded to the World Trade Center attack on 9/11.  Because there’s nothing more patriotic than leaving sick firefighters and paramedics out to dry…and die.

2.  republicans hate cutting taxes: republicans in the senate today successfuly filibustered (oh, what do you know?) a VERY small jobs package that creates a $30 billion Treasury Fund for small business loans AND contains $12 billion in tax cuts for entrepreneurs.  Clearly, those tax cuts are intended for LIBERAL entrepreneurs..

3.  republicans hate people who lost their jobs in the recession:  Right…BIG surprise.  Democrats were finally able to break a republican filibuster to extend unemployment benefits for about 2 million out-of-work Americans.  Republicans took advantage of the death of elder statesman Robert Byrd (D-VA) to stall the extension following the lapse of benefits in late May.  Because, you know, despite what you (and the experts) think, there’s plenty of jobs out there and “continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work” (Sen. John Kyl, r-AZ).  Jerks.  Of course, thats a perfect transition to our final “hatie”.

4.  republicans hate creating jobs:  It was only by the skin of their teeth, with just 5 republicans breaking ranks (FINALLY), that Democrats were able to pass a TREMENDOUSLY scaled-back, $15 billion jobs bill (it was formerly $85 billion…as a comparison, this represents about 2% of 2010 U.S. defense spending).

Conclusion?  republicans hate America?

And yet…republicans may win control of congress this November.  What is this, Bizarro-world?  Let’s make sure it doesn’t happen.

UPDATE: Watch Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) blast House republicans after the bill to provide assistance to 9/11 first responders fails.  This is the kind of thing I’ve been waiting to see.  My hero.
