Calling out the Right, Republicans and other jerks in politics

Idaho: GOP Playground

with 2 comments

While hiking in the foothills near Walnut Creek over the weekend, I passed a number of painfully gigantic mega-mansions with sweeping views of the Bay Area, and thought “Those poor people.  What they need is a tax break.”

Later, as I watched a man in aviator sunglasses idling his Ferrari (for 20 minutes) outside a sandwich shop while waiting for his wife, I wondered: “Why is that man’s tax burden so high?”

And when I hear a teacher complain about having to bring her own paper to school, and the mice that infest the offices, I think to myself “Why are we taxing the rich so much?”

Thankfully, the Idaho legislature agrees with me.

The good governor (Governor Butch Otter…thats right, look it up) and his republican minions in the capitol have already slashed education funding to below 2001 levels (when Idaho reigned in 48th place nationally for per pupil spending) and have cut spending on mental health services to the lowest level of any state in the union.  But one thing these republicans are good at…is problem-solving.

The problem:  the state is spending more than its receiving in revenues.  This has led to what’s known as a “deficit”.

The solution:  cut taxes for the rich!

If you’re like me, you’ve come to accept that cutting taxes is the best course of action in good times and bad, and can solve virtually any problem, from funding wars to balancing budgets.  Idaho is currently advancing a bill through a republican-dominated congress (translation: cake walk) to cut the corporate rate and income tax rate for the highest earners by about $36 million.  In an unrelated budget modification, teachers salaries will be cut by $19.5 million in 2013, as part of the “Students Come First” law.

Ahhh…republicans.  We know where they stand.
